Wireless LAN (WLAN)

All TUT students and faculty/staff members, who have their own IMC accounts, can use the University’s WLAN.

If you wish to use the WLAN for academic meetings and events, please contact the IMC office (1F, extension: 6639).

How to connect to the university’s WLAN

The Wi-Fi-enabled areas were expanded to cover the entire campus in October 2012..

Wi-Fi-enabled facilities

A Building, B Building, C Building, D Building, E Building, F Building, F2 Building, G Building, Administration Bureau, the Center for International Relations, University Library, Cooperative Research Facility Center, Manufacturing Technology Shop, Information and Communication Engineering Laboratory, Cryogenic Research Laboratory, Radiation Laboratory, Health Care Center, Incubation Center for Venture Business, Natural Energy Research laboratory, Civil and Environmental engineering Laboratory, Electron Device Research Center, VBL, Electronics-Inspired Interdisciplinary Research Institute, Extracurricular Activity Meeting Building, Student Commons, Hibari Lounge, Guest House “Hibari-so,” Information and Media Center

The yards in front of B, C and D Buildings are also covered by the University’s WLAN.


  • Wi-Fi connectivity is not available in the Gymnasium, Student Dormitories, International House and Hibari Village.
  • Taking potential impact on laboratory equipment into consideration, the WLAN in some areas has been suspended.
  • The use of former SSID kougitou was abolished.

If you are staying at Guest House “Hibari-so,” use SSID: tutguest.

Available SSIDs

The following SSIDs are available. Authentication methods and networks where you connect differ depending on the SSIDs.   For SSIDs whose connection destination is "Guest Network", you can not access private servers.

tutwifi connection procedure

Open the Wi-Fi setting screen of the OS and make the settings as follows.

SSID tutwifi
Authentication standard IEEE 802.1XWPA2-Enterprise
Authentication method EAP-TTLS(MS-CHAPv2)
User account Your Information Media Center account

tutwlan connection procedure

The following settings are necessary to connect to the University WLAN.

SSID: "tutwlan"
Encryption method: "WPA2-PSK" (AES)
Passphrase: "tutapwlan"

To connect to the University’s WLAN, please take the following two-step authentication process.

  1. Authentication for connecting to WLAN
  2. Authentication for using the University network

First, you need to configure WLAN authentication (WPA2-PSK authentication). Make sure that radio waves can be received in the classroom, and then configure the SSID and the WPA2-PSK as shown in the images.

Note: The setting window differs depending on the type of wireless LAN adopter you use. For details, please refer to the manual.

For Microsoft Windows 7

  1. Select [コントロールパネル] (Control Panel) and click on [ネットワークの状態とタスクの表示] (View network status and task) under the [ネットワークとインターネット] (Network and Internet) category.
  2. When the [ネットワークと共有センター] (Network and Sharing Center) screen appears, click on [新しい接続またはネットワークのセットアップ] (Set up a new connection or network).
  3. On the [接続またはネットワークのセットアップ] (Set up a connection or network) screen, click on [ワイヤレスネットワークを手動で接続します] (Manually connect to a wireless network).
  4. Enter the necessary information.
  5. Click on [ワイヤレスネットワークの管理] (Management of the Wireless Network) on the left side menu of the [ネットワークと共有センター] (Network and Sharing Center) screen.
    Select the [アダプタのプロパティ] (Adapter Properties) menu, and then use the Down Arrow on the right side of the screen to select [インターネットプロトコル バージョン4 (TCP/IPv4)] (Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)). Then click on [プロパティ] (Properties).
  6. Select [IPアドレスを自動的に取得する] (Obtain an IP address automatically) and [DNSサーバのアドレスを自動的に取得する] (Obtain DNS server address automatically) and click on [OK].
  7. Click on [ワイヤレスネットワークの管理] (Management of the Wireless Network) on the left side menu of the [ネットワークと共有センター] (Network and Sharing Center) screen.
    Select [ワイヤレスネットワークのプロパティ] (Wireless Network Properties).
  8. In the [詳細設定] (Detailed Settings) menu, remove the check-mark from the [このネットワークでIEEE802.1X認証を有効にする] (Enable IEEE 802.1X for this network), and click on [OK].
  9. Once your wireless network has been set up, double-click [ワイヤレスネットワーク接続] (Wireless network connections) with the left mouse button.


After WPA2-PSK authentication, try to connect via the Web browser, and the authentication screen, as shown in the image, will be displayed. Enter your user ID and password, and click on [ログイン] (Login).

If "認証成功" (Authenticated) appears on the screen, you can connect to the University network.

If this does not work…

If you cannot connect to the wireless network

Check the following:

Have you obtained authentication appropriately?

Enter your user ID and password correctly on the authentication screen.

Has an IP address been assigned properly?

Check if your computer has got an IP address.
(* In some places and time zones, it may take more than 30 seconds to get an IP address.)

For Windows 7, Select [ファイル名を指定して実行(R)...] (Run…) from the Start menu. Enter “cmd” into the [名前(O)] (Name) field and click on [OK].
Now, the Command Prompt is launched. Enter the “ipconfig” command, and then check if an IP address has been assigned to the wireless LAN adopter, as shown in the image.

If the wireless LAN adapter does not have an IP address starting with 172, you can renew the IP address by executing the ipconfig/renew command.
